I have a tree which needs removing. It is a laburnum, about 12' tall. Any ideas how much I should pay for cutting down & removing?

Depends on access, whether or not there is a greenhouse or wires or other obstacles to avoid. If it is a straightforward job then a one off visit depending on location may be 50. If a contractor is local then less. Based on felling to ground level. You should think about getting stump poisoned at same time 5ish. I assume you have checked on restrictions with local council eg. Tree Preservation Order, Conservation Area or if a newish house, planning conditions? All above is assuming you are in UK of course:-)

Thanks for such a quick answer. No, preservation etc didn't cross my mind. We planted the tree ourselves in our own garden about 10 or 12 years ago, so I just assumed it was ours to do as we wish. Is this naive?? (Yes, I'm in the UK!)
Very unlikely to be TPO as you have been served notice. However you may be in a Conservation Area in which case you have to give local authority six weeks notice of intention to fell unless the stem diameter is less than 75mm measured 1.5m above ground level. The penalties for cutting down, uprooting, topping, lopping, wilfully destroying or damaging a tree within a conservation area are the same as those applicable to TPO's. The maximum fines are 20,000 for destroying a tree and up to 2,500 for anyone who does not completely destroy a tree but has carried out some other works without consent. It can pay to check first! I would have hoped the prices I quoted are the maximums; on my term contract for tree works I would only pay about 15 to get this done but it is all based on volume of work etc.

Hi xanderma, Some folks who practice the the art of wood turning, pay s for laburnum timber, as the wood has a beautiful two-tone grain which is highly prized!

It may be worth your while, finding out if you have any wood turners in your area, who may be willing to take down your tree in exchainge for the wood.

ps dont think of selling the logs as firewood as it smells of cats pee when burnt. Good Luck..

Wow, the things you learn on Answerbank!! Thanks guys - we've just been quoted 100, but after reading your replies, we're holding on awhile. Very interesting to read about woodturners - I'd feel better about losing a much-loved tree if it was turned into something of beauty. Will certainly investigate. Thanks again - Diane
Whether you want a small tree chopped down or find a plumber spark or other similar Artisan simply visit your local pub and ask the landlord. It's what your 'local' was designed for!!
Height is not the only factor which affects to the cost so i cant tell you what exact amount should you pay for this so just contact "shire tree surgeons Glasgow" which is offering tree surgery service.
