Do a hot wash with a load of white vinegar in it, that should sort it out and if you do it regularly it will prevent the problem recurring.
It has always occurred to me that if a hot wash has an affect, what does that say about it's ability to get rid of nasties in your clothes when you don't always wash them hot ?
Your washing machine needs air, shutting the door causes this, use white vinegar in a hot wash will rid the smell, in future after a wash leave the door open so air can circulate.
Someone once told me to stop using liquid wash, and fabric conditioner. Since I have used powder only, my machine has not been smelly!
I use white vinegar regulatly in my machine since it broke down a few weeks ago. Agree with beattie about the liquid stuff, it makes my machine stink.
Clean the door seal thoroughly and empty the filter, then do the wash with white vinegar. Always leave the machine door open when not in use.
Have never ever closed the door on my machine, and have never ever had any smells. I always leave it slightly open.
The use of liquid detergent and lower temperatures makes this problem worse, because liquid detergents don't contain the same "bleach" as powders and it is the oxidising action of bleach that keeps smell-forming bugs and moulds in check.
And, as above, always leave the door (and powder dispenser drawer) slightly open so that air can circulate.
there is a product you can buy in the supermarket on the shelf with the dish washer tablets and the salt, you use it by itself on a separate cycle and it cleans the machine and leaves it smelling sweet, there is also one for dishwashers too.
You could try Dr Beckmann's washing machine cleaner from the supermarket, or has already been suggested you set wash without any laundry or powder and set your machine to the highest possible temp and run it through a cycle.
I tend to use both of these methods plus a run through with vinegar in the drum a good cupful - these always work for me as I do them regularly. Just a thought have you checked that the filter is clear
