Machine Washing Towels

I wash my towels in washing machine with mixed load setting using two tablets of Actilift in one compartment and Comfort liquid in the other. Towels are clean enough but are hard - not soft and fluffy like towels should be.
How should I wash them ?

Ironing them will make them softer.

NEVER use fabric conditioner after washing towels or cotton bed linen.

In fact, never use fabric conditioner on anything and do not use a tumble drier unless you want to contribute to destroying the planet.
