Milking a cow probably
Exactly what he had grown up seeing calves doing...ie extracting goodness from their mothers. Clearly he thought he might like it, too, and took steps to find out. Lo and behold...it was good! So, he carried on doing it.
Duh!
....and this is the first lesson according to QM on commonsense. Amen.
he thought he was doing something that had been done before... http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/History-and-Myths/Question120055.html

Duh !! - He needed something to add to his milk shake syrup.

Think it was the same guy who saw the round thing coming out of a chicken and thought...."yum- that looks good?"
First time I've thought about this and it made me smile. The question itself is so funny that it doesn't need an answer.

That man, tried milking my mother but she wouldn't have it. Of course, he tried luring her with some cake but she knew. Cows, however, are nice , and sometimes too trusting.

I answered a question in Parenting the other day that deals with this question. It's quite long so I won't copy and paste it, but if you want to read it, it's here:

I always use to think that milk was cow's urine because of the way it was milked. I won't go into the datails here!

I am sure that Billy Connolly also asked this when he was doing one of one of his stand up shows.
