Help please! My machine is an Advent 6552, running W7. The last 4 times on power up, it has automatically gone into Check Disk. Twice it has stopped 'of it's own accord' part way through Stage 2 of 3 (verifying indexes). It also shows '41% complete (291608 of 362612 index entries processed'. Each time this happens I have had to press and hold down the power button until the computer switched itself off. The other 2 times I have stopped it going into CHKDSK by pressing any key within the required amount of time. Once it is working, everything appears to be OK, I am able to write this, surf the web, send and receive emails etc. but is something wrong with the laptop? Does it need 'professional' help please?

Try booting from a DVD/CD and then running disk checking software from there ? Or you can try booting into Safe Mode. You can often skip the disk check but if there's an issue you need to get it fixed before it causes you loss.
BTW if you can get in and use the disk having skipped the check then chances are you are gambling with the error not causing you greater problems soon. Try a 3rd party disk checking application when you are in and running the PC.

When I upgraded to W7 from Vista, I was asked to make a repair disk. Is this the one to try now? If I re-install W7 I'll need to replace all the other files etc. won't I? As it happens I did a full copy of my part of the 'user' just a couple of days ago, so I'll not use anything vital! I use AVG, and have tried using their disk checkup (freebie for onetime use only - it runs out today), it says I have a file system error, and the effect of this is that it 'can cause data loss on the disk as well as program and operating system crashes'. I will try their recommended solution which is to 'Run a thorough analysis using AVG Disk Doctor to check the drive for errors and correct them', but if that doesn't work I suppose it's out of my league and down to my local 3d computers!

As an addition, I did boot in safe mode, but it made no difference - the CHKDSK screen etc. still appeared!
Do you have Kaspersky anti virus installed? A recent update conflicts with this program and causes the computer to go into the chkdsk process. Try and boot into safe mode and uninstall the update. It's KB2823324.
If there is a hard drive problem then trying to install over the top may not solve the issue. If TTG's comment is relevant then try that first.

After that, if the issue still persists, before you reinstall anything, you need to perform a disk check using software other than Chkdsk, since that freezes. And using it to "repair" the problem. And that probably means booting from a suitable bootable DVD or CD (or flash drive even).

The repair disk may be worth a shot though.

Unless you opt to format the drive before the reinstall then I'd expect any data files you have to remain intact (just as long as this drive problem hasn't already corrupted them).

I don't use Kapersky - I have the full version of AVG, and have used its Disk Doctor in an attempt to help. Whilst it found some errors and corrected them, it did nothing for the initial problem. I then Googled 'disk problems' and found this windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/.../check-your-hard-disk-for-errors but it would not run on start up. I am now going to attempt the 'repair disk', and will report back later! Just a thought though, a reinstall of W7 probably wouldn't make any difference would it?

P.S. to the above from me - on the advice of many ABers, when my AVG runs out I'm moving to Microsoft Essentials!
Read this from the Advent site,I know it mentions Vista as the operating system but I would assume it is a similar process for Win 7 to access rep[air mode. Incidentally Chkdsk can sometimes take a long time to complete and does appear to hang

Just an update on this - I turned the laptop on and then got called to the phone, forgetting that I had been stopping the Chkdsk task before it got started. I decided to see what would happen and let it run, bearing in mind that Pauln90 suggested that chkdsk can take some time to complete. Lo and behold, of it's own accord, it completed the task and I have had no problem since. On startup it goes straight to the opening of W7. Basically, the problem has sorted itself and gone away!! Thanks for the advice folks.
