TV or not TV? That is the question.

When me and my sisters were kids, our father threatened to return the TV to the rental shop if we didn't stop watching it so much. This was no idle threat - sure enough, two weeks later I came home from school and it was gone. Never had one since. Anyone else live without the "one-eyed monster" in the corner; or if you do have one, could you live without it?

After my divorce, I let my ex keep the telly and my daughters and I made do without. They got involved in a lot more out of school activities, it was easier to get them to read a book on their own and I read an enormous amount myself, particularly after they went to bed.
Sadly, I discovered just how frequently people talk about TV programmes and missed out on many conversations, but it was a good experiment for a year.
Unfortunately, my ex bought us a new one and the household rapidly returned to old viewing habits.
If I were on my own, I think I'd lose the TV once more because its just an excuse for me to be lazy and not think.
I could do without it easily, I think. There would be a very small number of programmes I'd miss (24, Shameless, erm...that's probably it), but I'd get over it. I would certainly get rid of the TV in preference to losing my CD collection or anything to play them on.
I do have a tv but rarley watch it, except on the odd occasion that there is a football match I want to watch. I'd rarther listen to music when i'm in the house. other times i'm out jogging, playing football etc... so i suppose I could live without it.
I think I could live without it. The trouble with television is that it is invasive if you let it become so.It has to be controlled like a dog ! I could not bear it burbling away in the corner all day long.
I only watch programmmes that are of interest to me which account for about six to eight hours of television a week .We mark which programmes we want to watch and then when we have watched them it is switched off.But I suppose if we did have to get rid of it for some reason we wouldn't be heartbroken.
