How do people come to these ridiculous conclusions?

They look a bit similar sure, but so does grass.

I had an argument with someone once about this and they were insistant that it was obviously true - then her boyfriend agreed and said he's always thought the same.

I even, the next day, took in a packet of chive seeds to show them and they still wouldn't have it.

the tops of spring onions are...spring onions!

Is this just an assumption, that get passed on to kids over the years or do you think someone was pulling their leg?

thx

I think you need to sit down calmly joko and pour yourself a wee drop of something relaxing. Take a few deep breaths and let the allium police sort this one out, they know their onions.:)
Lol! Nice one, dot!
They are not the same but one makes an acceptable substitute for the other. Chopped up you'd be hard put to tell the difference.

they thought that once you had cut off the white and light green bits what was left suddenly turned into a chive!

Of course the tastes and looks are similar, so mixed up in a dish you could be confused - but not with the raw veg! I expect it was an auntie or parent or something that just told them that because they didn't know themselves
