Sorry For Your Loss

I have never heard this phrase until the last few months - they say it on American programmes - The Mentalist is one.
Where has it come from? I must confess I don't like it very much.

Thanks, but I have never heard it. When my husband died, no-one said it. Must be me then.

Personally, I think this phrase conveys what you want to say quite adequately. Always hard to know what to say at a bereavement.

It's something I say and tend to write in condolence cards. I think it's quite nice, as the person is thinking of you rather than just the deceased. We all know how it feels when you lose a loved one.

I remember Mel Brookes on Parkinson. He said, "People were saying to me, 'sorry to hear you lost your father' I said I didn't lose him, he died!"

It's an emotional loss. I say it often, too often:-(
