I stopped using Google a couple of months ago after reading something about changes to their privacy policy. Something to do with tracking cookies, storing web usage data, targeting adds, user profiling etc...I thought it all seemed a bit unnecessary.
I use IXquick instead. It's updated now to startpage.com.

Also available as a Firefox add on.

Here's some of the blurb.
Startpage offers you Web search results from Google in complete privacy!
When you search with Startpage, we remove all identifying information from your query and submit it anonymously to Google ourselves. We get the results and return them to you in total privacy.
Your IP address is never recorded, your visit is not logged, and no tracking cookies are placed on your browser. When it comes to protecting your privacy, Startpage runs the tightest ship on the Internet. Our outstanding privacy policy and thoughtful engineering give you great search results in total anonymity.
You can also use their free proxy service as well...

Caran, I use Chrome on the iPad as I can't stand Safari, but it might be better for you. I've never seen an offer to update Chrome through the browser itself, all updates on iPad apps come through the App Store as far as I am aware. Tap on the App store, then tap in updates, it'll let you know which of your apps need updating.
Google Chrome automatically updates whenever it detects that a new version of the browser is available. The update process normally happens in the background and doesn't require any action on your part.
You can also check for update manually, click on the 3 lines/(formally a wrench) in the right hand corner, select "About Google Chrome" Chrome will check for updates when you're on this page.if they find any it will tell you to "Click Relaunch" to apply any available update.
Whatever you do don't update your browser from ad's on the web as some of them are bogus.
