i have an external, non-portable hard drive - it was replacement one and this one stands upright, rather than flat ..

can i lay it down on its side? will this affect the insides at all?

its just i preferred the other one, but they replaced it with a bigger drive so im not complaining

i just keep nearly knocking it over you see, and want to make it more stable, and dont want to risk damaging data.

thanks

(its a WD My Book Essential, there are no vents that would be blocked)

Hard disks seem to work any orientation. Many exteral enclosures have a stand so it's upright but I tend to prefer them flat.
I have a WD Mybook Essential and as far as I can see it would work ok on its side.

It has vents along the top and back (when upright) and as long as these are not blocked it will be fine.

Hard disks can be fitted inside computers in all sorts of directions and they work with no problem.
