This last week I too visited someone in prison for the first time, and like you was very nervous. However, I needn't have been. I suspect every prison is different, but this is how our visit went. We went to the reception first, where we were given a number. When our number was called, we then went over to the wing. We were not allowed to take anything at all in, but a little money (which is checked). Be sure to take your photo ID with you or you won't be allowed in. Everyone goes through a scanner, then is patted down. We were told which table to sit at - the room looked like a school hall. The money you can take in with you can be used to purchase food and drinks, both for yourself and the prisoner. I found the experience extremely emotional, but I'm glad I went, and certainly won't think twice before going again.
