Now that we know why we get cheap food deals from food stores, why not help our own economy and buy just british meat?If the demand will be high surely that the prices wil not be that high? How can imported meat be that cheaper.

i rarely buy ready meals, but do have some burgers from waitrose, not sure whether to bin it now.
Craft, I've just rceived that email.

I imagine local butchers will do very well out of this fiasco but, I'm still relying on their honesty, if they said the lamb came from the UK, I have to believe it really, how am I to know otherwise. It's knocked all my confidence in buying meat I can tell you.
It's quite funny rocky as when I was in Italy they seemed to make their meatballs with beef and pork anyway............
i didn't have a lot to start with. Will be much more vigilant if that is remotely possible, by looking closely at labels. I wish they would bring back our family run butchers.
em we still have a family run butchers in our village and customers are not just locals. Having said that I'm not sure if it's just for the meat as the butcher is rather fit.
"If the demand will be high surely that the prices wil not be that high? "

Have you heard the term 'supply and demand'?
That alone is enough to send prices sky-rocketing.
All the bodies responsible for food safety and health are being ruthlessly culled by Cameron and Co, so this sort of thing is inevitable - and the profiteering Companies responsible will continue pouring funds into Tory coffers as a result.
our two butchers went some years back, now its mega expensive supermarket, or traipse a distance to buy from butchers, or not so mega expensive supermarket. One halal outfit locally had the habit of throwing out bits of chicken heads and discarded meat onto the pavement, presumably they thought this was ok. i did report it to the local health authority, who promptly shut them down.. no licence to sell meat..
canary, have you got a link to that info, that food agencies are being cut..
An update - Cross-Party MPs on the environment, food and rural affairs committee criticised the coalition government for scaling back the remit of the FSA in 2010 when it lost staff and funding.

Successive governments have persisted in- boasted,really- about their policies surrounding "light touch" regulation. That the government should not meddle, that we need to reduce "red-tape". But, the banking collapse and now this demonstrates that handing over regulation to the Industry affords too many opportunities for short cuts, bad practice and downright illegality.

We tend to spend a little more and always buy our meat from the butcher. It is a bit more expensive BUT... You get the only the quantity you need and the quality is good. Therefore practically eliminating waste so it's kinda penny wise.
