When I was little (way back.in the late 70s) my mum used to read a book to me about an inventor who makes a machine that keeps getting bigger and bigger until it covers the whole world. I think that in the end (spoiler alert!) everyone ends up living in the sky.
It was beautifully illustrated in a kind of steam punk style and I would dearly love to read it to my nephs and neices.
Does anyone know of this book, what its called or who the author was?

I know its a long shot but hey, if you can't ask the internet, who can you ask?! Even now I'm wondering whether my recollection is real, half imagined or completely dreamt up.
Just read 'The Iron Man' by Ted Hughes. They will love it !
