They say that to be really fit you should try to walk at least 10,000 steps a day. I got one of those pedometers yesterday that count how many steps you make, and yesterday i did 10,500! How many calories did i burn up doing that do you think?

Can I ask where you got it Alixw?

I think the "10,000 a day" is just a guideline for what you're supposed to do just on an average day. I once did 37,000 after mowing a couple of bowling greens at work then doing a lot of general walking.

As for the calories burned, i think it would depend on a lot of things. If you walked the 10,000 very fast, you'd burn more off but i would certainly say that it would burn off over 500 during the course of the day....but that's a pure guess.

Drusilla.....you can get pedometers from virtually anywhere now....they are the fashion accessory. Argos, Asda, Tesco to name a few places with prices ranging from a few ponds to 30+

What is meant by a step tho? Is it 'left, right' or does that count as 2 steps? I am being serious by the way.
10000 steps works out at roughly 5 miles on the flat. Calories whilst walking at moderate pace - 3 - 3.5 mph is about 100 caloris a mile or twenty minutes. So you probebluy buned between 400 - 500 calories. If you walk in hot weather you burn off quite a bit more cus your body has to lose energy to stay at the right temperature. Not much chance of that in Jan in the UK!
