What Sort Of Roof Tiles

Hi,
have got a flat roof on the sunlounge, its a proper building, bricks, double glazing etc, but it has some sort of felt tiles glued to the roof boarding, and has now started to leak around the edges. i was thiking of changing it to a proper roof with a slight fall on it and tiling it with something cheap and lightweight. size is roughly 3 mtrs x 3.5. Any ideas?

One thing I'm a little confused about, annie. It's a flat roof (well there will be some fall of course.) Felt tiles are usually only used on ordinary slopey roofs. Very common in some parts or America.

Do you see what I mean? Also, is there a deck, or do you stand directly on the felt tiles?

Hi Builder, thanks for answering. no, its a flat roof, chipboard or ply I think and the felt tiles are basically glued down, I can walk on it o.k. at the edges the tiles are folded over and a piece of that plastic boarding is fixed over it, then guttering attached to that. it is the edges that are leaking into the room, horrible brown water dripping from the coving when its been raining for a while. I intend to strip it back to the wood and fit some sort of proper tiles if possible.

Ah....... for a start, if I understand your description annie........

The felt tiles are folded over, then the plastic board (I'm guessing fascia board) fixed through the hanging down bit of the tiles, then the guttering?

If that's right, that could be the problem.
The fascia should be UNDER the tiles. These tiles should drip into the guttering.
I can't think how anyone could ever come up with the arrangement you have at the moment.

You need 2 things done.......
1 stop water getting in..... Have a sensible flat roof guy "torch" a new strip of felt around the perimeter. Bear in mind that he may advise going over the whole area if it's coming to the end of its useful life.... I can't tell from here.

2 For a pukka job, lay "Promenade" tiles all over. Have a look here.......
