I use google a lot for searching but when I use it and gmail i get the box saying Join Google but is there any advantage in doing so , especially as I want to remain anonymous.

I've now realised you can't join Google and be anonymous it's a bit like facebook in that respect but to share just about everything you do on the web with the rest of the world seems to be asking for trouble.

What do you mean with "join"? If you've got gmail you have already got a google account. Joining any of the other groups will only reveal as much as you publish.
