I have been left a ring in a will and need to have it valued as believe it to be quite valuable. I approached a local jeweller who said the gold was of minimal value and the value must be in the 5 inset stones but wasnt able to recommend any where to get it valued!? (puzzled me as well!) Any one know where i could get a valuation in the manchester area for these stones?? Thanks in advance

Most auction houses will provide free, on the spot, valuations. For example, I've simply walked into Bonham's prestigious offices in London and asked to have some antique timepieces valued. Within a couple of minutes I was talking the same guy that people queue for hours to see on the Antiques Roadshow, who was happy to value the items without obligation. (Of course, all auctioneers hope that you'll sell through them but there's never any pressure).

Bonhams have an office at Hale:

Capes Dunn also provide valuations (by appointment):

as do Brock's in Stockport:

Can I ask why you need to get it valued? If its for legal or insurance purposes, google jewellery valuation as you will need a written value, there is usually a fee and for that you get a written description of the ring plus a valuation on headed paper plus it's signed by the valuer

Its for insurance at the moment, but possibly to sell in the future. thanks to you both.
i would try another few jewellers - not all jewellers are experts ... so are just shopekeepers
Use a reputable jeweller and do not leave it at the premises or it may come back with inferior stones replacing your good ones.
you do realise that an insurance valuation will be more than what you would realise if you sold it?
What colour are the stones ? unless they are diamonds or other high quality stones the ring is likedly to just be worth the scrap value of the Gold. What carat is the Gold ? high value stones are not normally set in low value (9 carat ) Gold.
I an assure you not many jewellers would be bothered to tak eout stones from a ring and replace them with inferior quality stones !!! As mentioned, unless they are maga quality diamonds, you would get a scrap value for the ring, based on weight as the gold weight is more than the stone value you will come off better off. Unless it is a fantastic ring, youi shouldn't have to get an insurance valuation as most policies allow you to specify items up to £2000. If you give me more detail of the ring, I can tell you roughly what the replacement cost would be.. Check the hallmark - 9ct is 375 , 18ct is 750 this will affect the valueation. You should be aiming for about £9-10 SCRAP VALUE per gram of ring
and do not be fooled - alot of very nice diamonds and stones are indeed set in 9ct gold!
go to a different jeweller, the one I go to has provided written valuations of replacement cost for insurance purposes. You won't get nearly as much as that if you sell it. Look on sites like eBay to see if anything is selling there.
