Absence makes the heart grow fonder.
Andy - Sorry to be a pedant but those two sayings mean one and the same thing surely?
I suppose something like 'Home is where the heart is" or "love thy neighbour' would be nearer.

Thanks, Home is where the heart is seems to fit the bill
andy I think the opposite of Absence makes the heart grow fonder is Out of sight out of mind.

The more I think about this one, the more confused I become!
Familiarity breeds contempt means, I think, that the better you know someone the more you take them for granted and lose respect for them. The contradiction is either
1) that you show great respect for complete strangers or
2) that you show more respect for someone the better you know them.

I can't think of a suitable proverb that sums up either of the above: can you?
I think if you
a) dont always apply it to people - you can apply it to anything that you are familiar with eg your car, the nhs, buses, electricity etc etc
b) use the word 'contempt' in its widest sense - (it doesnt immediately mean you dont respect something , it just means you think it is beneath consideration) then it makes abit more sense.
Like turning on a light switch - you do it so often that 'familiarity breeds contempt' and when it doesnt work you dont half miss it!
"To know me is to love me" is the opposite of "to be familiar with me is to hold me in contempt."
