When these characters announce they are leaving for a while to 'get away' from something or other, nobody asks the obvious questions normal people would ask like 'where are you going to live?' or 'what will you do for a living?' and they only seem to take an overnight bag, what about the rest of their stuff?

They often used to pop up in 'the bill'
They go to live in Never Never Land.
In Eastenders they used come to Ibiza regardless of the fact that we had no direct flights in the Winter and it cost a fortune. Nowadays they settle for Spain or Portugal!
A lot of ex-soap characters turn up in Doctors. Oh wait a minute, that's another soap!
Benny went to fetch a spanner in Crossroads and never returned.
Not only that,I am always amazed at how many bedrooms are in soap houses as they seem to be able to accommodate all waifs and strays!!
they move to another soap, thus negating the need for more clothes.
It's a bit of poetic licence.

In the same way - hardly anyone watches TV, or reads papers, or talks about news items, or follows a football team, or apart from the occupations within the soap's environs - no-one talks about work.

It all helps ease the writing - if they had lengthy discussions about everyone going 'off' - actors' contracts specifiy a set number of weeks' work in a year, so there is time off regularly included - they would never have time to get the affairs and murders sorted aht!
One question I would like to ask is when you see someone in a soap watching tv has anyone ever seen them watching a soap episode ?

WR.
And I want to know why, when they're skint, they send money on cups of tea in the cafe next door.

ya right there.amused me when the skint dingles all turn up at the pub for breakfast, i would work that out at 4 x £4.50 at least
No one in Albert Square owns a washing machine either,it's simply creating spaces for communal meetings with more cast members.
Leanne in Corrie threatened to move to Leeds don't know who she knew there, Toyah didn't get a mention,as you say they only take an overnight bag makes running away sound simple!
Eastenders characters generally go to Manchester - Ozzie soap people go to Brisbane ..... and ..... IT'S NOT REAL!!! x
Change from going to look after sick aunt like so many did well two that I know of
Always amazes me when they pop off abroad at the drop of a hat, as if some of them would have the money to be able to do that.
Alastair McGowan used to do a wicked send-up of the Eastenders 'absences' - it was always 'send them to Manchester' when characters appeared to realse that it wasn't 'real' - '"Peggy, I've seen your Grant, he's abroad making documentaries ..." and so on.

Best one was when everyone had sold their large Victorian terraced house within walking distance of a tube station for over a million each - which is entirely feasible in 'real life'!
Its amazing when someone new turns up without a home or a job, someone takes them in and gives them a job which they just happen to be experienced at. Interviews are unheard of!

Remember the 'full circle' roke in soaps - everyone will work at the central employment locations - pub / lauderette / shop / cafe etc eventually, and everyone with a pulse will eventually sleep with everybody else!
