I have ordered two chairs and paid a deposit. If the shop were to go bust, would I get my deposit back?

I would say you would be added to the list of creditors and so would have to stand in line.
No.
Unlikely, the tax man gets first grabs..........

Grr .. I'll just keep my fingers crossed then.
Unless you paid more than £100 by credit card and then you can get it back from your card company.
Fitzer is partly right.

If the goods cost £100 and you paid a part of it by credit card, you can claim from the credit card company.

"Here's a quick example of how it works…

Savvy Salma spots the high-tech TV she's been planning to buy at half-price for £500, including delivery, in a high street sale. Yet she's only got £10 left on her card limit (don't worry, it's a cashback card, she's going to pay it off in full).

Salma pays £10 of the cost on her credit card and the rest on her debit card. Sadly the next day the store goes bust, before her telly is delivered. Yet she can claim the WHOLE £500 back from the credit card company, because she paid in part on the card.

Therefore if you want protection…

As long as it costs more than £100, pay for even a fraction on a credit card and you're protected."

Thanks Fitzer. That is a good point. I'll have to check how I paid.
Question Author
Thanks hc. I think it was a debit card, is that the same thing?
Sadly not but there is a little protection if it was a Visa debit card (not Mastercard)
Question Author
Yes, it would be Visa. Thanks hc. This is at present a hypothetical (sp) question. I just hope they don't go bust!
Seems it doesn't matter what debit card you use - you may be entitled to a 'chargeback'.

Thanks hc. I'll check out those links.
Interesting HC, I had always thought you needed to have spent more than the £100 on the CC, I shall squirrel that info away for the future, ta.
Fitzer, I am very keen that everyone knows their rights under consumer law and take every chance I get to 'bang the drum'.

Cash is no longer king.
