Have narrowed the area down to Scotland, Fort Augustus and Caledonian Canal, but struggling with both clues. The only monument in the area appears to be the Commando Memorial. Is the monarch referred to Victoria? Where did she stay before she bought/built Balmoral?

Hello Top Cat2, Happy New Year

I think the monument is the "Well Of Seven Heads" at Loch Oich - where seven murderers were decapitated and their heads washed in the well before being displayed at Inverness Castle.

Having difficulty with the house - its either Moy Hall which has a link with Bonnie Prince Charlie or Invermoy House which has a link with George V.

Many thanks John. Will follow up those helpful leads. And Happy New Year to you, too.
Question Author
Following your lead, John, have found website that says Victoria and Albert stayed at Ardverikie House for a month before buying Balmoral.
the house is definitely Ardverikie, as it fits both with having been lent to Victoria and Albert, and the journey down the loch to the railway. The monument is def The Well of the Seven Heads.
You may as well give up on this, Sunday Times travel editor! No point in buying the paper, as answers freely given here! Supposed to be something to work out, so pointless really!

Do you think the ST editor reads this? Remember, Dkeyse, this site is caled Answerbank. My assumption has always been that contributors help others to solve quizzes. Clearly, you prefer not to share your knowledge. Might I suggest you stop using this site?

Thanks Top Cat2 and Brainiac for the information on Ardverikie House. Very helpful.

Also your comments to Dkeyse nicely put !!

Good Luck Top Cat2 What lovely places in the search the countryside looks lovely where the monument is as I said makes you want to go I like Scotland and will make a journey there this year. Question Author

Thanks, Pega. Nice to read your comment. I can't understand why some people trawl through this site just tell others not to use it, basically!! I only ever ask the answer outright after drawing a total blank elsewhere. I also agree with you about this quiz. You learn/see so much about the country we live in. All the best for a prosperous and happy new year!
