How do I go about proving the ownership of my personalised plate if I have lost the relevant documentation for it?

BS this is the complicated part. I own the plate but it is on the car that I sold to my brother so the car has a new registered owner but I left the plate on the car as I didnt want it on my new car. Now I am ready to sell the plate!
