Can I change reg plate back?

Hi, I've just bought a car that has a private/ personalised number plate on it that I don't particularly want... is it possible to revert back to the old original plate it had when registered? Will the original reg plate still be mine/ the car's? Is this an easy or costly process, and can I then sell the personalised plate on if I wish to?

I'm pretty sure you cannot revert to the old original plate -DVLA will issue a new one
