Get a Blu-ray player since they play DVDs too. Then you'll still be able to play your current discs but be will have the opportunity to enjoy the better picture that a properly produced Blu-ray will give you.

Thanks, bibble. Can you suggest any makes/links?
Not really. The only one I've had is a Sony that I've owned for about 18 months so I have nothing with which to compare it. I just know that the picture quality of those film releases that have been specially mastered for Blu-ray can be fantastic (but also some not as good as they ought to be).

Thanks, bibble. I've had a quick look at the John Lewis site and there's plenty of choice there (depending on budget, of course!).
The reason I am asking is that I was given DVDs at Christmas and I didn't like to say I don't have a player.
ah... if you've harboured a secret desire to play video games then you might consider a games console since they also play DVDs

Bibble
I have to hold my hands up and say I have never played a video game in my life!!
they're not to everyone's taste so I'll go back to my original suggestion of a Blu-ray player
If you want to play bluray dvds you should
also make sure you have a HDMi cable to
connect it to the TV.
If you only want it for occasional use then just get a cheapo one, the LG from richer sounds does the job fine and lasted just as long as an expensive one where I work (about 18months, but they are playing 24/7 so none has ever lasted much longer than that)

And yes, you need an HDMI cable to, don't get ripped off on the cable, a £5 one will give exactly the same results as a £80 one!.... there is no benefit at all from buying expensive HDMI cables because it's a digital signal.

Thanks, chuck. I went to the link, only to see 'not available to online customers'. Just my luck.
Hi annemollie, I was interested in your question and chuck's reply, as I too need a new DVD player, so I looked on Amazon. They have the player he mentioned, it was £69.95,with free delivery, but it had very good reviews, 12out of 20 reviewers gave it 5 stars.I rang our local Richer sounds but they have sold out anyway, and he wasn't sure if they will be getting any more in- it sounds like a great little machine and especially if you could get it for £39.95 of course.Do you not have a branch near you? rosy
Like Chuck, I'd be looking at Richer Sounds, rather than John Lewis, for DVD/Blu-ray players. £5 for an HDMI cable, Chuck? That's expensive; they're £2.99 in Family Bargains ;-)

Hi, rosy
Found a store 60 miles away but they have also sold out!
Woe is me.

Thanks, Chris
I will have a browse this evening. The LG is available in a store 30 miles away. Do-able but with difficulty.
Thanks again.
