Merry Christmas all. x

I need a new laptop (old one has died) and I've seen a Samsung 300V5A on Amazon, 6GB RAM, 750GB HDD, Windows 7 at £280. Sounds like a very good price to me.

I do internet banking, occasionally watch "catch up" progs I have missed, surf the net, don't bother with games.....does the above spec sound right for me?

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks peeps. x

Great value Mrs C. I'm no expert, but it should do everything you need.
The only criticism is of the processor. Not the fastest by any means.......

Perhaps roj or Chuck might comment later on whether this is important.
ANY fairly modern laptop can do what you want. The model you suggest would certainly be OK, and the price seems reasonable, but you're still paying for more than you actually need. I'd be looking here

for something a bit more basic (but which can still easily handle the tasks you mention). The Lenovo ThinkPad might be worth considering.

(I can personally recommend that company).

The only problem with buying lower specification machines is lifetime.

As time goes on new applications assume higher and higher spec machines. Whilst adding more memory is relatively easy adding a better processor, especially on a laptop is not.

If you buy one with a processor that is simply adequate now you may find yourself frustrated in a year or two

You're all very kind. Thanks very much, peeps. x
Get yourself a high spec Acer we've got one each and have been working well for three years. Only technology can make them redundant

Thanks Bravehearted.
Bravehearted, I bought a top of the range, very high spec Acer 2 years ago. They are refusing to update the drivers for Windows 8.

I can't recommend Acer.
