Secondly. apart from the obvious sights(s.o.liberty,empire state building etc) is there any less well known, but "hidden gems" sights/places/areas.

Hi there - I just got back (on Wednesday) from my first trip to New York. My friend and I had a BRILLIANT time. Apart from the obvious we also went to The Top of The Rock, which is the top of the Rockefeller Centre. It has just been re-opened after 20 years and is great. You get the BEST view of the Empire State Building and also a wonderful view of Central Park. We went to the top of the Rock in the day and The Empire State at night so got the best of both worlds. Also went to Grand Central Station which is just amazing to see - the Christmas lights on the ceiling are great - there were loads of people just stood there watching. If you're shopping in 5th Ave and need a coffee there is a Starbucks in Trump Tower which is a great place to relax and watch the waterfall behind the Christmas tree. Greenwich Village, SoHo, Little Italy and Chinatown were great to wander through. We went there on the Saturday, Central Park on Sunday and 5th Ave on Monday (apparently so close to Christmas 5th Ave is HEAVING on a Saturday). I'm sure you'll have a great time.

BTW - if your friend is calling your mobile she will still need to do the +44 even when you're in the States!

the staten Island ferry is well worth a trip great views of liberty and the round boat trip is good value, also the apple bus can get on and off all day long and takes you everywhere Cathedral of St Patrick and St John's are worth seeing. and of course a broadway show, tickets are cheaper near swatch shop in times square. theres so much to see really (Have been 7 times) but wrap up well its bitterly cold have a good trip

If you are taking your mobile phone, is it tri-band with the roaming bar removed?
