Nort sure if this should be on here or in adverts! There is an advert about Christmas (think its ASDA) where at the end the woman puts tin foil over a turkey. Well I have always used tin foil with the shiny side out, but she puts in on with the dull side out - have I been getting it wrong all these years?

i think if you are just covering something up it does not matter
To oven cook or go in the fridge?

I seem to recall being told to put it one way to oven cook with it. something about heat reflecting back to what ever is being cooked
Load of old rubbish IMO though. Doesn't matter what side you use, you have to make sure it's cooked right through

It looks nicer with the shiny side showing, otherwise no real difference.
Your real mistake all these years is calling it by the wrong name! It's aluminium foil.
Beg to differ... it's aptly named aluminum foil (here in the U.S.)... but that's due to the vagaries of English and Americanisms... otherwise, all manufacturer's of the product state it makes no difference how it's used vis-a-vis shiny/dull...
Clanad: It's a shame that you can't spell "aluminium" properly in the USA - but at least you know it's not TIN.

Its cooked and she's covering up the remains - never seen it used dull side out.
As I've said, it doesn't matter. It's not dull and shiny for a purpose - it's like that due to the way it's made. But it's still ALUMINIUM foil!
How about the original name of "alumium" :)
It's the metals properties which as far as i'm concerned do not change whichever way you use, It's not it's reflective properties that make it better in cooking so either side would be okay.
It makes no difference which way round the aluminium foil is used, unless you're using the special 'non-stick' stuff (which tells you on the box which way round to use it!).
