I am getting no sound from my laptop. Tracks I have in itunes won't play (the play bar doesn't move). I can't preview songs on itunes nor can I play CDs using RealPlayer (again the play bar doesn't move). I do get error beeps though.

The volume control that normally sits on my taskbar has disappeared and if try and adjust the volume via the Control Panel it says "No audio device".

I got rid of some Spyware from my system a couple of days ago but the sound has worked since then. Other than that I don't think I adjusted anything on my machine.

This is making me soooo mad, can anyone offer any advice? Please?

Just for information, I did a system restore to before I removed the Spyware then undid the system restore back to today and the sound reappeared. I've never been so happy to hear the windows startup music! Hurrah!!!

Look in the device manager (xp/2000 right click my computer > manage > device manager is listed here). Are there any problems (crosses or exclamation marks)? If so, I would enable disabled devices or reinstall problem devices. Here is more info on device manager: http://www.computerhope.com/win95er.htm

Although I thought had solved the problem the sound disappeared again the next time I logged on. The system restore trick didn't work the second time I tried it. I have been without sounds for over a week but the laptop has just decided to play sound again. I suspect that my machine will just be tempremental for ever.

Thanks for your reply j2buttonsw, there are no problems showing next to any of the devices. Thanks for the link as well.
