I've heard of people building custom computers before, so how feasible would it be to build myself a laptop, assuming I have access to someone who knows what they're doing regarding parts and where they go etc?

I think it's possible but it's not nearly as cost effective as building a desktop.

I have never heard of building you own laptop. The problem with laptops is that they are not generic like a desktop so you would have to buy a specific case for a specific mainboard. Also everything on a laptop mainboard is on-board. so if you wanted a such and such graphics card with such and such sound card and such and such north bridge chipset you have to see whether a manufacturer built it and they would sell it to you as a spare part. Just buy a HP laptop,
