recovering data from the hard disc and enlivening a pc after being flooded are two seperate things.

the pc if turned on while wet inside would ruin the circutry , with it being a laptop and having a charged battery during the flooding the on / off switch could when wet still pass the power to rest of pc and ruin it.

however if the pc on tv had been drained of power and the pc not on when put in water the hard drive could be dried out and reused " within reason" .

cops ploy to accuse Ian?

You're saying little chance as most lappys have active batteries?

There are specialist data recovery firms. They physically remove the platters from the hard disk, fit them in a new drive mechanism. Chances of recovery after water immersion are probably around 99%
I thought the platters were in Corrie?

Take it apart as much as you can: remove battery, optical drive, keyboard (if you know how) and hard drive. Even better, Google for a disassembly manual and take it apart completely. Leave in warm dry pace for at least a week. If it seems dry, but it back together and plug it in - WARNING! if it's not dry, it'll probably go bang.

If still no joy, you may be able to pull data of the disk with and external caddy/USB device.

Hard Drive platters are metal and look similar to a Cd and therefore would not be effected by water once removed from the machine.
although only a soap, producers try to keep storylines factual, I think you will find that in Ian's police interview it was not claimed that police had recovered the missing laptop, a supposed soaked laptop was produced & Ian was asked ''is this the same laptop you were seen on cctv throwing into the canal'' Ian replies yes. The police did not state that it was in fact the same one. I think they are bluffing.
Hard drives are hermatically sealed. They have to be, to prevent the entry of any dirt or moisture that could affect what is a delicate precision mechanism. Simple immersion in water shouldn't affect it or any data it holds.
