Who are these people that keep inventing Java updates? There seems to be a never-ending stream of them. I accept the updates but am not aware that they've ever made any difference as far as I'm concerned. Do you download them and what do you think they do for you?

Java is a product used a lot by hackers to gain entry to your PC or to run spyware or malware.

I assume as soon as a security hole is discovered in Java they fix it as soon as possible, hence the regular updates.

That's interesting VHG. The notification usually appears as a icon in the sim tray (bottom right). I wonder how I can stop it arriving there.
just update it
Obviously you have Java Script installed in your Computer. Unless you really need it for certain sites, I suggest you uninstall it completely for the reason indicated by VHG....."Java is a product used a lot by hackers to gain entry to your PC or to run spyware or malware."

If you open your control panel in Windows there is a Java icon there (if you change to Large Icon view mode).

Double click on this icon and when the window opens find the setting which says "check for updates" and turn it off.

However make sure you update Java manully on a regular basis.
Hi VHG.....I am still wondering if the OP really needs Java. I got shot of it some years ago and have never found any need to re-install it. However, I think I read somewhere that it is a requirement for users of 'Hotmail'.

Some sites do use java, but as you say, you could try uninstalling it and then only reinstal it if a web site says it needs it.

The mystery thickens! I found the java icon in Control Panel and tried clicking and double clicking, but then I see 'System cannot find the registry key specified'. Perhaps uninstalling will be the best answer?

I've given up for the moment trying to get rid. The usual method of uninstalling via control panel didn't work - told me the feature I am trying to remove is on a network resource that is unavailable. I also tried to delete a Java folder from 'Program Files' but was told 'cannot delete, access is denied'.
