No not practical - rice cooks from anything from 10-20 mins depending on type so you don't need to use the fuel for hours

Thanks Spikey, I hadn't thought about it properly!
The best rice is Basmati...which cooks in only 15 minutes at most.
I've tried ordinary rice-and discovered you need much less watert than normal in a slow cooker. I'd stick with cooking Basmati on the hob.
I always use basmati too, and like everyone says, it cooks in about 15 mins. My method is this - and it works every time.

First if all, measure the rice in a straight sided container (I use a ramekin as there's only two of us) you need slightly more than twice the volume of water to rice. Soak the rice for a while (this bit isn't necessary but it seems to stop the rice from sticking) before rinsing in a sieve under the tap. Put the rice and water plus a bit of salt in a pan and bring to the boil. Turn the heat down, stir once and once only, then put a lid on the pan and LEAVE IT ALONE!!! It will take about 15 mins for all the water to be absorbed by the rice, and when that's has happened the rice will be cooked. Fluff if up with a fork, and hey presto!! Perfect rice every time!
Tilda do one - 2 minutes in the microwave, Look out for offers when it's at £1.
I'll add to LyndaB's and say just cover the rice-you don't need a lot of water with Basmati.
Microwave rice - for people who have more money than sense and/or can't cook?
Slow cooker will prepare your rice for rice pudding. There are several types of rice to have with curry. Pilau, boiled and sweet rice. I make sweet rice with butter, sugar, orange zest. Par boil the rice, seperately fry butter and some suger, add a little food colouring, orange zest, then add rice. Stir, and cover until cooked fully. I enjoy that one with curry, its sweet and sour.
^^^^... food colouring? Turmeric would do the job.
Turmeric would, but i don't like the taste of it. The food colouring is purely to make it look nice.
I've never found turmeric to have much of a taste-and only a tiny bit would be needed. Fry it with the butter-that removes the harshness from spices.
my mum says it doesnt have taste, but i really can taste it.
I always use brown wholemeal rice which takes about thirty minutes on the hob. It has a lovely, nutty taste.
personally I always use basmati rice using twice the volume of water to the volume or rice. I always add a knorr chicken stock cube to the water before turning the hob on. when water boils add rinsed rice and bring back to the boil and then stir just once and simmer with lid on pan for just TEN MINS ONLY and then remove from the heat and leave for another ten mins.........perfick!

Thanks for all your answers. I too use turmeric for colour. I use basmati, but couldn't remember the name when I posted. I was thinking it would be good to do in slo-cooker, but as you can see from iluvspikey (first post) it isn't worth doing it that way!
