Things have obviously moved on a bit from
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-16703402
then.
Isn't there a place somewhere along the M62 where the motorway lanes diverge to avoid a house that the owners refused to sell when it was being built? This story reminds me of that.
bet its not long before a lorry rams it in the dark!
The Phoenix International Media Centre is a work of true beauty (and I'm not being sarcastic).
It's struct me that the really suprising thing about this is that the Authorities haven't simply moved them forcibly .

Afterall we are talking about the Chinese government here - why have they shown such tolerance ?

/// In the People's Republic of China, during most of the Communist era, private ownership of property was abolished, making it easy for residents to be moved on - but now the laws have been tightened up and it is illegal to demolish property by force without an agreement. ///

/// Property owners in China that refuse to move to make way for development are known as 'Nail Householders' referring to a stubborn nail that is not easy to remove from a piece of old wood and cannot be pulled out with a hammer. ///

Ah, they put things so simple don't they?
That has happened in UK too many examples.
i like the idea of opening a drive through shop!
Here's another thought - if i was the daughter/son of the owners of the properties in the Chinese case and in Mick -Talbot's link ; i wouldn't be very happy that the value of my inheritance and been decreased to zero :-)
Is there any way ( short of driving along the M62 ) to see just before the motorway diverges around the property ?
If it was in Europe the EU would have awarded a grand to build a flyover or tunnel. The couple would also have got compensation for inconvenience etc, and even more dosh for breach of human rights. I'm going to the pub!
^^^^should have read grant not grand.
Looking at the picture and the insert ( it looks the other way ) it doesn't look right . It doesn't look like the motorway proper and the text said it was a road going to the village.
The motorway is not officially open yet, which is why there are so few cars about!
I know it's not . I was looking at the tarmac , the divisions between the roads and the markings on the roads. There is also the other point how are the residents going to cross the roads. There is no sign of a tunnel, without it the couple obviously can't stay there . Also how about the utilities , gas, water, electricity, sewers . I can't see the authorities laying them on.
