I doubt that a team of investigative journalists will run a story in Newsnight - especially in light of the Leveson enquiry - without having very strong evidence to support their case. They will also have contacted the individual concerned to ask for comment.
Once they break the story, they will be passing their info along to the police.
This is what investigative journalism is all about. Where there is a clear public interest, they should go ahead with the story.

Tom Watson, who became a household name after his dogged pursuit of News International over phone hacking, threw a curveball at David Cameron during the session on Wednesday.
The West Bromwich MP asked a hushed house: "The evidence file used to convict paedophile Peter Righton, if it still exists, contains clear evidence of a widespread paedophile ring.
"One of its members boasts of his links to a senior aide of a former prime minister who says he could smuggle indecent images of children from abroad."

At this point cameras covering PMQs cut to David Cameron who was sitting forward in his chair, clutching his binder and looking extremely serious.
Watson continued: "The leads were not followed up, but if the files still exists I want to ensure that the Metropolitan Police secure the evidence, re-examine it and investigate clear intelligence suggesting a powerful paedophile network linked to Parliament and Number 10."
There was an uncomfortable silence in the chamber before the current PM took to his feet.

Cameron said: "The honourable gentleman raises a very difficult and complex case and I'm not entirely sure which former PM he's referring to.
"What I'd like to do is look very carefully at Hansard about the allegations... and look very carefully to see what the government can do to help give him the assurances that he seeks."
A report from the Independent newspaper in September 1992 described the Righton case. It says:
A LEADING expert in residential childcare was fined pounds 900 yesterday when he admitted importing and possessing illegal homosexual pornographic material.
Magistrates at Evesham, Worcestershire, heard that the material included copies of a recognised paedophile magazine and photographs of young boys under the age of 16 posing partly dressed or naked.
Peter Righton, 66, of Badsey Road, Evesham, admitted two illegal importation charges and one charge of possessing obscene material. He was ordered to pay pounds 75 costs and the magistrates ordered that the magazines should be destroyed. //

"In 1999, an international investigation of child pornographers and paedophiles run by Britain's National Criminal Intelligence Service, code named Operation Ore, resulted in 7,250 suspects being identified in the United Kingdom alone. Some 1850 people were criminally charged in the case and there were 1451 convictions. Almost 500 people were interviewed "under caution" by police, meaning they were suspects. Some 900 individuals remain under investigation. In early 2003, British police began to close in on some top suspects in the Operation Ore investigation, including senior members of Blair's government.

I just read all the stuff, a bit like an anti labour party thing by some scot who wants the english out. I have no idea what truth there is in this, but I really cannot imagine that the government and the eu people are all paedo's.
I really hope I am wrong. Perhaps tonight we will find some truth, but time and failing memories cause some to imagine things or bend the truth a little.

Its a modern thing, in the fifties and sixties the word paedophile was unheard of, but, there were child sex abusers about, but everyone ignored the problem,
parents told the kids to not to be silly and go and watch telly or something. just like gay people, hidden away from the public eye. it's been going on for years, but I really can't see that there is a paedo ring in the government, or ever has been, thats just too much to swallow.

percy, EVERYONE IGNORED THE PROBLEM? Are you kidding me? My mother certainly didn't ignore the problem when I was pestered by a paedo, she reported him to the police and he went to prison, not for pestering me but for crimes against other children.
As for my own children, they were made aware to be careful and to look out for each other. I certainly did not ignore the problem, I kept a very close eye on them.

Horrendous story told by the victim called Steven on Tonight. How a car would turn up and take them to where there would be people waiting to abuse them, as if the children were kept just for their delectation to be picked up and dropped off again at will. And how he was treated when he went to the police. Nowhere to turn. Poor little lad. He must be pretty upset that the abuser wasn't named.
