I think so, I've always thought that the big bright thing you sometimes see next to the moon is Venus.

I could be wrong though.

It might be Jupiter. That's why I'm asking.
See, told you I could be wrong!
It is Jupiter, Venus is closer to the Sun presently and so below the north-west horizon at this time of the evening

Thanks, everyone. and particularly to boxy. What a fascinating website that is. I have always been interested in planets and stars.
It come from my Dad who used to point out different constellations to me when I was a little girl. He didn't know a lot, just the more obvious things but he knew enough to spark an interest.
