What is the derivation of the idiom 'at loggerheads'?


There is a village in Staffordshire called Loggerheads near which there was a battle during the Wars of the Roses - is there any connection?

An explanation is in one of the Patrick O'Brian navan novels -one of the 20 - can''t recall which one - two seamen were fighting with the loggerheads
