Hi,

I've made an appointment next week to discuss going back on some contraception as I've been getting some really painful periods and they're coming about every 3 weeks with a long build up (horrible now as hips been really bad too) and I just feel it's something I could do without for a while while I settle on other meds and such.

I was on Depo for years and it took a long time to come off it and had some hormone issues though I liked not having any periods. I tried Yasmin recently which was good but obviously you still have the break bleed.

The Yasmin seemed good for PCOS symptoms but would the Depo do the same? I don't have a partner and, as on methotrexate, any pregnancy would have to be "planned" well in advance anyway.

Figured I'd get some more info so more clued up when I see the nurse.

hi jenna. i also have pcos and have depo provera. in my experience, it is the only thing that really works - i have tried most else (including the pill) but have had horrible side effects from them. i also love the depo as i don''t have periods (which is heaven!) and that seems to be the most effective way to manage my pcos. i did find this (see below) which i thought would be helpful for you (do have a look at side effects and not to be used in sections). regards, lisa x

Thanks for those, really useful :) I did take Yasmin for a while but never got round to going back for a repeat prescription. It was great at helping sort things out, I was having a really bad time with awful PMT symptoms for a week or more beforehand, similar to what seems to be coming back now.

I would be fine with Yasmin again though I do like the idea of no periods again and not having more tablets to take.
hiya. my other half used to joke that i was hormonal for a week before a period, one week during and the week after. i'm not even sure i was well behaved hormonally in the spare week either! the depo was a saving grace for me - it has literally given me freedom from my periods which were absolutely awful in every way.....i have put on weight, but that is a small price to pay for living free of all my problems. i have been having the depot for 7 years now (i know what the risks of doing so are) and there is no way i would even consider anything else.....i went to the gum clinic today for my jab in the bum and i reckon they would be a good place to go and discuss contraception and pcos - better than my gp i think. have you given them a try? you can have consultation appointments where they explore your history in great detail....it might be helpful x

Ahhh it's so tempting to go back to one jab per 3 months and being free of it :) I'm not as bad at the moment as I was before but I don't want it to get back to that - if it's pain (and hormonal crap) I can avoid then it's one ticked off the list :)

I asked the nurse who did my bloods screening for the methotrexate earlier (she even offered and did my flu jab so I didn't have to book a separate appointment!) and she recommended a particular one of the other nurses and to book in for a 20 minute appointment to go through everything. Got it on Tuesday.
