Isn't it marvellous how opposing politicians can forget party politics and come together over such things, yet fail when it comes to the more important matters, which would be more beneficial for the nation as a whole?

Yes - it is not legal.
sp maybe the churches feel they don't need to be told that and should keep their noses out.

There are some churches in the UK who WANT to perform same-sex marriages and what Milliband is proposing is a change in the law to allow that.

He's not proposing to force churches to perform these ceremonies.

/// if you find old git offensive, why are you stupid enough to have it in your user name? ///

Maybe just as stupid enough to choose a cartoon dog, but i wouldn't dream of calling you 'DOG FACE'.

Incidentally as I have explained before, I chose my username back in the days when AnswerBank was a much more friendly and less aggressive site than what it has become today.

It was taken from a TV programme where a panel of a more mature group of celebrities, discussed and criticised on the world today, but I never for an instant considered that one day there would be some amongst us who would use it in such a disparaging way, when they felt they were losing their argument.

/// Party politics ARE put aside when issues of national importance are at hand. ///

And whether or not gays are allowed to marry in church is now considered an issue of 'national importance'?

Can I swing you ack to your original question...do you think that Milliband, whilst implementing a three line whip on the matter, isn't wholly concurring with government proposals?

You could argue, that this is a fundamental difference in the approach all three main parties are taking to marriage equality. I suspect the Conservatives have explicitly excluded religious ceremonies because of the massive problems that would rake up for churches.
No, I think you misunderstood what I meant.

Party politics are put aside when they need to be...and this just happens to be a situation where the parties largely agree with each other.

Actually do you think the redefinition a millennia old institution ISN'T a matter of national importance?
So 'old git' is rude and is a disparaging term. I do hope therefore you will refrain from posting under such an offensive user name. I could recommend 'fluffygrandpa'.

Grow up, or I will consider refraining from debating with you any longer, which would be a shame since we have managed in the past to get along, even if we debate at times from opposite sides of the political spectrum.
