Can make calls but not receive them.Occasionally the phone rings once but when you pick it up it appears dead. The person ringing into my number says the phone rings but the phone does not ring at my end. Tested the line but no fault there, but i do not always believe that as i have been told before that the line is fine, and when an engineer came out it took nearly 2 hours to rectify the fault.

The problem could be at the exchange and not with the line into your phone. I'd keep at them. It could also be what they refer to as an intermittent fault, if you can still receive the odd call

Thank-you for your reply,it is not easy trying to explain what is occuring when the person on the other end of the phone you are communicating with does'nt have english as their 1st language.
Are you using any phone extensions ??
I had a similar problem a while ago and got a VM engineer out. He located where the line came into the house and then disconnected the lead coming out of there, to the rest of the extensions. Everything worked fine with the extensions disconected, so now the rest of my phones in the house are cordless.
If you have any extensions, disconnect them and plug your phone into the main socket. It's not enough to unplug the phones from each socket, you've got to disconnect the extension that comes out from the main box, so that the only phone cable that is "live", is the one coming into your house into the main box - no extensions should be "live".
If you don't have any extensions, then just ignore all of my waffle lol :P
