Why is it that tea cups that are stained chocolate brown with tannin seems to be acceptable by some?

I have witnessed this many times, when I comment on it, they reply "its just tannin"
Does giving dirt a name justify it?

If i presented a plate with old dried gravy on it and said "its just gravy" that wouldnt be acceptable!

The thing with tea cups and tannin, it cleans off in 5 seconds, DO IT!!!

Grubby urchins!!!

Rant over!! :-)

''I can't understand how anyone can drink from a cup like that''

Trouble is, you're not always aware of it until you're half way through and have revealed the 'tidemark'.
Dee Sa, it was a Jubilee thing.

i despise that! it comes off in seconds with a scourer but if the offending cup had been washed up within an hour of use it wouldn't happen! My OH has cups like that at work and each time I go I clean them and he moans about it, but I refuse to drink coffee from such a disgusting cup. He says it adds to theflavour of the tea, how does it add to the flavour of coffee though? If all the cups have such stains, how can you make a cuppa soup? And is it true it adds to the flavour of a tetley tea bag? if that's true why don't tetley advertise that 'tetley make tea bags that make mucky cuos taste lke tea'? I know that tea leaves used to stain the inside of a tea pot and that did apparently help with the brewing process, but tea bags are inside the bag and the leaves don;t touch the inside of the cup! the idea of tanning on the inside of a teapot is that the leaves of loose tea were swirled around inside the tepot to enhamce the flavour and then it was left to settle, tea bags don't need that!
I never drink to the bottom in a new place and I kinda swirl the tea around the cup to get a sneak preview of what's about to come.
Fluffs, I knew it!! Lol :)
Tip for getting tannin stains out of teacups. Pop a denture cleaning tablet into cup & leave to stand for an hour.

RATTER15,I agree. It may be "just tannin"but would any Aber accept a tannin stained cup in a restaurant or hotel?-I think not.

"would any Aber accept a tannin stained cup in a restaurant or hotel?-I think not."

No, but I don't charge people for tea when they come to my house.
Same with teapot

whiskeryron my gran used to do that to clean the teapot, she left it overnight. awful thought I hope she didnt pop her teeth in there too !
Oh I so agree with you , its sooooo annoying!
I must admit I always clean teacups because they look so gross. However I have my great grandmother's teapot, with about an inch of tannin stuck to the inside stretching all the way back to the Irish famine;-)
To the Irish tannin encrusted teapots are a delicacy, a way of life, rather like a fine vintage champagne is to the French.lol.
lol NOX.

>>By your argument you would presumably strip all household surfaces of stain and paint<<

Yes if I was going to eat or drink from it!!!
I once worked with someone who went mad if you attempted to wash his cup. The cup was black with tanin.

He maintained its like a wok and needs 'seasoning' to make the tea taste better.
I'm sorry fluff, but "leakage from my crumpets" is possibly the filthiest thing I have read for quite a while - have you been reading 50 Shades of Breakfast ... ?
My ex-Mrs used to say that her tea tasted better out of her tannin-stained cup

One of the many reasons why she's my ex-Mrs now
but you knew what i meant!
joeluke, when I served in the Royal Marines on board HMS Bulwark back in the 60's, the mess tea fanny (tea pot) was rinsed but never had the tannin cleaned off. It was claimed that it had been like that for years.
