I, like many others, have a bird table and bird bath in my back yard. I have bought some bird seed for our feathered friends but it does not last 5 minutes. I got if from the local pet shop but it is rather expensive and you can only get it in small quantities.

Can you buy this bird seed in bulk over the Internet or anywhere else for that matter? I am on a very limited income and need to save where I can but do not want to stop feeding the birds.

Thanks in advance for all your kind and helpful answers.

Sunny dave; that is a really good answer if I wanted to pay MORE than at my local pet shop. Those prices are higher than what I pay at the moment but I am sure you meant well.

Has anyone else got a place that sells 'cheep' bird seed?
You might try a local market. Or if you have a petfood wholesales. You don't mention how much you are actually paying so it is difficult to say. If you really want to save money you can leave meat out to rot and get maggots...birds love maggots. Stinky but cheap!
Wilko has a good selection at lowish prices.
Jonny. If you are struggling to buy bird food how are you going to feed the sheep and the chimp?
I get mine from Wilkinsons , very cheap, also bear in mind that you normally only feed birds in the winter, they find their own food in the summer, (so I have been told) also it makes sense.
I buy all of my birdfood in wilks.

We have a pond and water bath for birds too, so their not short of water.

Also, my sparrows have a feast all day on 2 tablespoons of porridge oats, it really does last all day. I spread it out on a wall ledge that is close by to our conservatory. ---cheap and cheerfull jonny.

Sebastian Crow!

I will try the tip with porridge oats the next time I get Scottish birds in the garden. Thanks for your help, folks, you have been great as ever.
Home Bargain is def the cheapest that I've found.
We have a Home Bargain store opposite a Wilkinson's store, so I decided to check them both out. I can't remember how much they were in Wilkinson's but home Bargain is quite a bit cheaper.
A bag of 1.8kg bird food costs 99p and a pack of 6 fatballs costs 49p - you read that correct by the way, no typing errors - I challenge anyone to find cheaper ........
Lidl do a bird food chain of peanuts and fatball. They cost £1.69 and last for at least a week. All the birds love them/ I have three in my garden and all sorts of birds visit them.
Cheap bird food is mainly wheat grains. If you have fields with wheat in them its easy to collect a bag or to at harvest time. The money saved buys premium bird food with high energy content,
I dont mean your own fields!

Go to a feed merchant and buy it by the sackful. It won't be called 'wild bird food' that's what costs the extra.
You don't need to spend a fortune .
Blackbirds love sultanas .You can put out out suet and oats .Cold cooked potato, stale cake and bread (but soak it first )cooked rice. Robins like cheese .
Mealworms are cheap to buy as are fatballs . You can make your own fatballs .
I collect the snails that lurk around and throw them on the shed roof ....the birds soon make short work of them.
Any pound shop.
