Fantastic that Mo Farah won Gold on this great night for UK athletics. But how disgusting of his fellow runner in the red kit to spat on the track, and how relieved were we all when Mo narrowly avoided rolling in it? Ewwwwwwww!

The chap that spat was his training partner who helped him win...........I'd have rolled in it if it meant a gold medal.
athletes often have to get rid of mucus during sporting events. They seldom have lacy hankies in their pockets, so they have to spit. Farah may have done the same during the race, I didn't see every second of it. I wouldn't worry too much about it.
It is something the British seem very good at. Pity it isn't an Olympic event, we would win easily. Assuming Diouff is not allowed to compete.
at least it wasn't puke - as many do.
We said "Yuk" too - but I actually thought he'd been sick. We also were saying "O Mo don't lie in it!" ................... not a savoury thought!
I must admit, I was thinking 'oh my god, please don't roll in that gob'.

Not sure why sportsmen produce mucus but I have always believed it is not polite to spit. It can easily be swallowed. It may even be illegal in public places due to the spread of tb. Why cant the sports authorities take steps to iradicate this disgusting habit, especially in football. Tennis players do not seem to do it. Unfortunately it has become a fashionable habit among the younger generation to copy the sportsmen.
After running 6 miles with no water, I can tell you there's no way to swallow any mucus. Most sportsman/women that do a very physical event will spit, it's not polite but they're not there to win gentlman points.
I agree with johnny 37....I have never understood this "spitting fad."

If one is suggesting that it is due to dehydration following excessive exercise, then how come the body has saved enough fluid to lose in spitting mucus which contains very little water?

If one watches a football match, then even the substitutes spit when running onto the field even before they start to play.

Tennis players manage it.....golf players manage it ....squash players manage it...

No...sorry, to me it is just a habit......a bad one at that.
Totally agree Sqad. Totally unnecessary and repugnant! When I worked in the office of a large production company which operated 24 hours, it was disgusting walking into walk at 7.30am after the night shift workers had finished shift at 7am, trying to avoid huge amounts of plegm, spit or "quilking" (as my family call it!) I narrowly avoided slipping in it some mornings, there was so much on the bridge into the factory. In the end it got so bad the workers were told about it by the management!
* phlegm not plegm - before the spelling Police correct me! What a strange word it is to spell!
Spitting is commonplace in running events. This was a 10k race not a garden party. And well done Mo!
