How do postal orders work?

Can anyone tell me how postal orders work? If I have one can it be cashed only at a post office? Many Thanks.

NO, it is bought at a post office (there will be a slight extra charge) and deposited in a bank.
Forgot to add, the bank then takes the postal orders back to the post office and gets the correct cash amount for them

So am I not able top just take it to a post office and them give me the cash for the amount? If I have to deposit it, I have an online account with the Halifax and so I must pay in my cheques at an ATM, if I put the postal orders in the envelope will that be OK? Thanks.
Hi paulobrad, you can certainly take it to the PO and get the cash and I think you can pay it into your bank account the same as a cheque.
