we have been invited to my long lost cousin's wee boys christening and in the afternoon to his first birthday party. we are travelling from glasgow down to stone on the saturday for the one night, party etc on the sunday and home straight after the party. cousin not to bring anything due to use spending on accomodation, petrol, food etc but wouldn't turn up empty handed. What would you say to spend on gifts?

Not much. Firstly, Christenings are not, or shouldn't be, about gifts. Secondly, he'll have no memory of his birthday party. I think you doing the journey is enough.

We have adopted this plan in recent years - for new babies in the family, we go to the Royal Mint website, and buy the gift set of baby coins for the year in which the baby's born. It costs about £25 per baby now, but that's it, we don't buy other gifts.
