Shortlisting for interview

hello does anyone out there know if you have any right of appeal against an employer not shortlisting you for interview when you feel you meet the criteria

I can understand that you are disappointed and probably feel that ou have been robbed but use this experience when you apply for your next job.
pdq1 - I don't know about other places but we don't start checking references at the short listing point. It would be a massive waste of time! We only check references after interview when we've made a job offer (generally pending references).

In education they call for references after they have short listed but before they offer the job.

I understand you are aggrieved but there could be a whole host of reasons why you weren't picked - are there internal candidates they know better or already know they are going to appoint (which happens very frequently). Was your application online, typed or handwritten? Maybe they judged your literacy? Could be anything, age even.
And sometimes they are obliged to advertise externally but have an internal candidate in mind. As Prudie says, there could be any number of reasons.
Is a Register of Lecturers an actual full time job? Seems to me that after you've made the list you wouldn't have much to do.

There are currently 4.5 million people on benefit of one kind or another. There are currently 400,000 jobs available nationally. Even if you strip 3 million of those people out for whatever reason, there is still a shortfall.
The jobs market is brutal at the moment, and every vacancy is inundated with applications. The law states that jobs that are advertised internally also have to be advertised externally, so a lot of jobs that are on display are already taken.
It's horrible to be rejected but sadly that's the way it is right now.
Update your CV, post it all over the internet and apply for everything. Eventually it might work.

peterbaz- as others have said, for many jobs there will be dozens, maybe a hundred in some cases, who appear to meet the criteria, but shortlisting also takes account of the quality of the application letter and how well you show you show why you are ideally suited to meet the person spec
People who are shortlisting generally don't CARE about the gender or age of the applicant in my experience unless there is a genuine occupational reason. All they are trying to do is winnow out the inappropriate applications and ensure that the best applicants get interviews. Interviewing is a resource intensive process, ideally you need to be sure that you would (potentially) offer the job to any interviewee. (retired NHS manager)
not always fac 30 (application letter) In the NHS when I was working there, all jobs were applied for online, no handwriting, There was space for a personal statement and some comments about why wanting to change jobs. We also NEVER kept applications on file or contacted previous applicants to suggest that they applied again....it would have been a full time job managing the files and the phonecalls.
I think you need to let it go - do you really think causing a fuss and launching an appeal against them and their decision is going to help you get the job?
even if they did call you for interview after that - how much further do you think they would let you get in the process?
you would be labeled trouble.

they only have one job and have to whittle people down somehow... it could have been something very minor but thats what they have to do.

if they asked in the job description for people to have those criteria, then i assume everyone else had those too - so why do you think you are special for simply for fitting their request?

perhaps this atittude, that you are better than the others showed in your application... you cannot know the quality of the other applicants so how can you feel better than them?
