My daughter has just told me she got 4 text messages from a number (700040119) which were to win an ipad. She replied with 'stop' after each one but they kept coming in at a cost of £5 for each one! She insists she never sent off for anything or signed up online for anything and she doesn't know how they started. She's always really good about not going over her allowance and she's dead upset about it. I'm bloomin skint too! I've searched for any info about the number, but apart from comments from other folk who have been scammed I can't find anything. How can folk get away with this? It's basically daylight robbery.

She needs to phone her service provider now and get them to block the number. If this is a known scam, there's a good chance that they'll refund the charges...

The account is in my name, so I'll do it right now. Thanks Mark :)
she should ignore/delete these texts, she now knows not to press 'stop',
it's learning the hard way. Lots of people have fallen for these, I did once,
but now just delete.
failing that Ofcom

there are some arse**les around karenmac...hope you get it sorted...
I've posted before about these scam texts. DO NOT SEND "STOP" this just confirms to the scammers that the number exists. Just delete the message.

I know this is a bit late for you Karen, i'm sorry, these people should be *****

She wasn't charged for the replies - it was £5 per incoming text so deleting or ignoring would have made no difference. They are sh**s! I've managed to get an email address through TMobile, so I've fired off an email to them threatening further action if they don't refund her money. Unfortunately, T Mobile don't refund for premium rate services according to their website and customer services are closed, so I'll speak to someone tomorrow. And I'll get onto OFCOM too. Thanks all xx
You could try ICSTIS too

You can block all incoming (and outgoing) premium text services.

The mobile comanies hate doing it (because they get their own cut of the charges) - but if you keep insisting and work your way up the manager/supervisor route it can be done.

It will mean you can't vote on Xfactor etc, but that's a sacrifice worth making.
Bloody hell Dave, Simon Cowell will have you put on his hit list !
