I am a trainee nursery nurse who is contracted 40 hours a week, lately i have been doing 7am-6pm four days a week along with 8am-6pm the other day. (making me work 54 hours a week over 5 days)

is this allowed and can they make me do this?

I assume you have a lunch break so this should be deducted from your figures,
Have they made you work the additional hours and have you received any extra pay for it?
I'm a bit rusty on the working time directive for weekly hours but maybe buildersmate or others will see this
The law says that most workers should not have to work more than 48 hours a week on average. This includes any overtime. However, you can choose to work more than 48 hours a week as long as you have agreed this with your employer. Your employer cannot force you to work more than 48 hours if you do not agree.

The rule that you cannot work more than 48 hours a week, does not mean that you can never work more than 48 hours in one week. The number of hours you can spend at work are usually averaged out over a period of 17 weeks. This is called the reference period.
To work out your average weekly working hours, you need to divide the number of hours you have worked by the number of weeks in the reference period. As long as this number is not more than 48, you are working within the limits that the law allows.

There are different rules for workers aged under 18, who must not normally work more than 40 hours a week.
As marden states:
Assuming you are over 18 and not excluded from some aspects of the regulations this will be controlled by the working time regulations 1998/12.
This stipulates a maximum of a 48-hour week averaged over a 17-week period, which you can opt out of as an individual or by way of workforce or collective agreement.

Hi thank you for the answers, it was for my daughter, I keep forgetting to log out. Yeah she gets two 15 min breaks and 1/2 hour lunch. They are short staffed and she is on a very low wage which is why they use her, she does get paid for it. Its more that she normally works 4 days as its long hours and uses her day off to get her SVQ work done, with doing these extra hours she's finding it tough going to still keep up with the SVQ.
sounds illegal as she shouldn't be tired to look after children!
Well, thats more than the legal break entitlement, which isn't much, is it?
