probably best place to look is the website of the route operator,
http://www.crosscount...LGcr7ACFTMetAodskBaUw
using random dates in june, cheapest fare seems to be £35 each way on selected services - the website suggests a fare of £17.50 is available, but I've not seen that fare against any train yet, probably because I'm not looking far enough ahead.
journey time by train is just over 3 hours. If speed isn't a consideration, you can reach newcastle from birmingham in 5hr40mn for a 5iver, by Megabus.
In theory you should get the same prices wherever you look but as with any generalisation there are exceptions. Using the web site of the company that operates the trains sometimes (and only sometimes) gets you a bit of a discount.

It's possible you are looking too far ahead - much beyond mid-August and there will be no cheapies

You could also try split ticketing - at Leeds or York, or possibly travel via Manchester and split there.
