This morning I have received two letters from the Inland Revenue, both relating to 2011-12. One is a demand for £600 saying I have underpaid. The other letter contains a cheque for £151 saying I have overpaid. Confusing or what?

Give 'em a phone Mrs O.

Return the confusion to them.

<<<<<hollow laugh>>>>>

alba, I've had the phone clamped to my ear since band on 9am.
I think it would be easier to contact the dead

*band*? *bang*
Been there MrsO and the phone call to try to sort it out almost made me cry. The lad kept telling me that although I didn`t start receiving my state pension until three months after my 60th it was back dated to the day of my 60th as would be every woman`s pension even if they were 64 when they started to receive it. Scary.

I think they are a shambles.
I have only just finished paying back an overpayment for 2010-11 and they swore blind they had it sorted for 2011-12
Write to them with copies of the 2 letters and ask for a statement of your tax calculation.

'Phone calls are OK, but you don't have a record of what was said, while they record everything.

If you're on PAYE, you need a statement of your tax code for 2011-12 and 2012-13, as they may muck around with that, too!

Good luck.

Saw you again on the telly last night in the excellent programme on Victoria Wood.

Thanks venator.
I haven't aged too badly, have I? Could I offer you "two soups?" lol
Last year I received five tax codes,a refund and a demand for tax not paid on non existent state pension. Plus a letter regarding my working hours at Next???? Spending hours maybe. Pleaded insanity and gave the lot to a financial adviser.
Good Luck.
get to the bank with the cheque !!!
...and when you write to them, send two copies of your letter, one marked "right hand" and one "left hand" because one knoweth noy what the other doeth.

I'd love the soups - come join us on the Apotheosis - we're hoping to meet up on board ship soon, and the soup will keep us warm!

The offices open at 8am I got straight through the last time i rang them, you can also ask for an appointment at your local tax office if you are elderly and need help.
Regardless of age I think the tax man will need help when MrsO has finished with him.
You're in a position similar to when two wills turn up for the same deceased. Which is dated the later? That's the one that counts -if it's the refund, keep it and get on with your life, but if the bill, don't cash the order till you've sorted it out.

friedgreentomato......elderly????? Me?????? I'm in my prime!

I gave up on the phone and have written to them.
Tell 'em to send you the other £449 or you'll sue - that'll fox 'em
