It is cheaper to insure yourself on the car and have your son as a named driver
Yes OJ, but it's fronting and is illegal.

He'll have to be the named driver and add someone else, preferably someone over 40 with no points, and then shop around.
Not necessarily OJRead we recently looked into insurance for our 18 year old boy. For him to insure the car with OH as named driver was about £1000 but to insure it in our name with the boy as named driver was about £2500.
If you put him as a named driver when he is really the main driver , it is illegal and if the insurance company suspect what you have done he will be uninsured as the policy will be void.
You can add him as a named driver to your own policy if he really is just a named driver, make sure you use a company who award NCB fo named drivers though as many don't.
How ever you do it insurance for a 19 year old male is going to be VERY EXPENSIVE , don't expect any change out of £2000 even to add him as a named driver . Insuring his own car is going to be a lot more probably at least £3500 . You have to remember that 1 in 3 teenage drivers have a accident and make a claim inside the first year!
Bluescorpion your quotes seem unbelivably cheap where and when did you get them ?
I can believe it, insurance for youngsters (because they are high risk) is hugely expensive as they are a high risk category, whichever way you insure them.
some sort of advanced driving course?
Boxtops I said that bluescorpions quotes were unbelivably LOW , £1000 to insure a car for an 18 year old even with a mature named driver is far lower than anything I have heard of recently ,£3000 is more like it.
Eddie we used the comparison websites and Collingwood insurance came out cheapest on each one for my son as main driver, but it might be because he hasn't yet passed his test. We are expecting it to go up when he does. My point was really that if we looked at insuring the car in our name the quote went up enormously to have him as a named driver.
There was something on TV about this yesterday. The person phoning in was quoted £14,000.

Apparently you can now get a black box type thing installed in your car. It logs all your driving, miles, speed, etc...that could help bring down insurance for younger drivers.
To give some idea, I asked about adding my son 23, as a named driver for occasional use of my car. I pay £230 a year fully comp, they wanted to put it up to £2100 , I looked at all the web sites but the best I could get was £1800 . That is for a 23 year old a 19 year old would be far more expensive.
I could not afford it so I am insured just for me.
yep, agree with you Eddie.
Bluescorpion Yes it will go up a lot and I mean a lot when he has passed the test as he will be driving unaccompanied .
There is an extra test called Pass Plus which the young driver could do after the ordinary test , it costs around £150 but gives a discount on the insurance.
They say the discount is a lot more than the cost of the extra test , up to 30% .
OMG, only just come back to this - Yes, I meant what Eddie said not what I said
If he has his own car the premiums should come down significantly if you leave him as the main driver but add yourself as a named driver.
Another option is for him to manage without a car for a few years.
